When it comes to furniture building poplar is not a popular choice.
While it's classified as a hardwood - poplar trees have leaves rather than needles, it's actually softer than many types of pine species. In furniture it's generally used as a secondary wood, wood that's usually not seen on the outside of a piece. The insides of drawers is one example. But!
As you'll see in the accompanying video, it can be quite striking if the right pieces are chosen. With stain applied, it almost attains the appearance of oak and with the oak inlay with celtic knot and brass edging on the top it can stand with any of the expensive exotic woods.
